Blogging the TCA Blogs #12 - More “Dollhouse”

Wednesday, July 16, 2008
Hopefully this quote from the master himself will help quell some of your fears:

TheTVaddict.com: So how different is it working with the new regime at FOX, in contrast to what happened with FIREFLY?Joss Whedon: It’s a completely different energy then the last time. FOX understands what it is we’re trying to do. I understand clearly what they want. And while there’s definitely a back and forth, there’s a collaboration. Not just people glaring at each-other.
I feel really good about how they plan to position it, and their feeling about it as a concept and as a show.

After Ellen with an Eliza Dushku quote about Joss Whedon:

“Joss really gets women,” she said. “There’s a woman somewhere deep inside of him!”
TV Guide on Joss’s non-reluctance to work with Fox again:

(Fox Entertainment President Kevin) Reilly says he has seen “no skittishness” in Dollhouse creator Joss Whedon in the wake of his struggle with Fox on Firefly: “I thought, No way is that guy coming back.” But he has really enjoyed working with him. “That is a guy who has earned his reputation.”

OMG! Gawker Q&A with Joss Whedon!

Saturday, July 12, 2008
The title of the Gawker post says it all.

Q. Some fans have already launched a campaign to save Dollhouse from fickle network programmers who cancel everything that doesn’t have enough fart jokes. Other fans see these organizers as casting a desperate light on Dollhouse since it hasn’t even aired yet. Do you have a stand?
A. I love the effort, but do think it tends to put us in the cheap seats.

Insiders have gotten to see Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog early and the reports are flying in.

And a “Dollhouse” musical? “I rule out nothing,” Whedon joked.
For the outsiders, it premieres online in three parts next week starting July 15th. But after the third one debuts, you’ll only have 48 hours to check it out before it’s all pulled.

Plus more goodies in the article about Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog starring the legendary Barney Stinson.

Let the Speculation Begin

Wednesday, May 07, 2008
While we have heard various grumblings, the new Fox schedule is not set in stone yet. But here is what the HR is reporting about pickups:

Over at Fox, J.J. Abrams “Fringe” looks like a lock after an enthusiastic response from the network’s brass during the weekend. Fox already has given its blessing for staffing to begin on the Warner Bros. TV-produced sci-fi drama.

“Fringe,” which has the scope of Abrams’ “Lost,” is rumored for a fall launch as a key weapon in Fox’s effort to shake off its fourth-quarter ratings blues. It could be paired with “Prison Break” or “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.”

Fox’s other high-profile new entry, Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse,” which is still in production, is eyed for midseason. Meanwhile, the Bernie Mac starrer “Starting Under,” which also was delivered to the network during the weekend, looks good to join Fox’s multicamera comedies “Back to You” and ” ‘Til Death.”

Also set to be hot at Fox are comedies “Outnumbered” and “Spaced.”

Inter-Show Nerd Fight

Tuesday, May 06, 2008
IGN TV: With Joss Whedon coming to FOX with Dollhouse, is there a little part of you that thinks he’s coming to take Summer Glau back?

Josh Friedman, EP of Terminator: (laughs) Yes! I will say that some of my more uncomfortable moments as executive producer of this show involve me, Joss Whedon, and Summer Glau at Comic-Con standing together. I felt like I’d gotten into the middle of a very intense relationship that I shouldn’t be a part of. So I just had to walk away.
And referring to the other guys with new potential shows at Fox (Whedon, JJ Abrams, Ron Moore, Shawn Ryan):

Josh Friedman: Those guys, certainly more than I do, have a brand that brings with it a group of fans. I only hope that a year from now we will all be grouped together on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. Though I’ll be the guy in the back bringing coffee. “Not Pictured: Josh Friedman.”

From the Mouth of Whedon

Tuesday, April 15, 2008
In an interview with E!’s Watch With Kristin, Joss provides his own description of Dollhouse:

The idea is those with the money or connections can access this secret highly illegal facility where they can basically fulfill their greatest fantasies. Most people assume that means sex - and on an occasion it does, because that is a lot of people’s fantasies - but it’s basically scenarios. They can basically reenact scenarios of romance, adventure or anything perfectly, because they become the person that you want them to be — they become that person. They don’t act like that person, they are not a robot pretending, they become that person, and then they forget all about it. The problem is the character of Echo, Eliza Dushku’s character, stops forgetting. She doesn’t completely remember, but she does realize she is a person, and that she might have been a person before she did this, and she doesn’t know what that is.

Dollhouse - THE BASICS

Wednesday, April 09, 2008
Just a quick rundown of the show. It’s from Joss Whedon – the mastermind behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

This show already received an order of seven episodes, so it’s likely to air.

Summary
A group of young men and women called “Dolls” are imprinted with different personalities and talents for assignments. This state is considered “active.” They are housed in a complex called the Dollhouse where their minds are wiped clean, which is when they are considered “inactive.” The Dolls have no independent consciousness of their own and no memories of their previous lives. A Doll named Echo begins to try to find out who she really was.

Actors and Characters
Eliza Dushku is “Echo,” the Doll who begins to have memories of her previous life.

Olivia Williams is “Adelle DeWitt,” the ruthless and protective woman who runs the Dollhouse.

Tahmoh Penikett is “Paul Smith,” an FBI field agent obsessed with the urban myth of Dollhouse and a twisted romantic foil for Echo.

Fran Kranz is “Topher Brink,” a twenty-something genius programmer responsible for imprinting the Dolls.

Dichen Lachman is “Sierra,” a Doll like Echo and her friend, who has every personality in the world but her own.

Enver Gjokaj is “Victor,” also a Doll and a friend of Echo’s. He is childlike when he’s inactive, and everything from Errol Flynn to young DeNiro when he’s active.
